Soda Bottle Hourglass


Optional Assignment for Credit


How to use this activity to earn credit to boost your grade.




In order to earn credit for this assignment, you must do the following:

  1. Using the directions provided, make a soda bottle hourglass.
  2. Choose a variable to test (size of opening, amount of sand, amount of water, different substances-sand, water, vegetable oil, salt, etc., or any other variable that you want).
  3. Change the variable to see how it affects the time of your hourglass.
  4. Make a data table to record the results. See sample data table.
  5. Make a bar graph of your results.
  6. Bring in your hourglass to show Ms. Gould.
  7. Hand in a sheet that lists your Independent Variable, your Dependent Variable, the things you kept constant (list at least 4), and your prediction about your results.
  8. Also, hand in a copy of your data table and your bar graph.


This assignment is worth 30 points.
It must be handed in to Ms. Gould by the specified due date.
